The notion of the subject has a long tradition in the fields of psychology, linguistics, philosophy, sociology and cultural studies. Broadly, the subject can be identified with the genesis of desires, feelings, thoughts, and actions 鈥 always modelled by cultural, moral, socioeconomic, psychic and biological discourses. Various schools of thought associate the subject with more specific elements: psychoanalysis emphasises the notions of pulsation, identification and desire, while cultural studies are particularly interested in the subject鈥檚 (dis)connection with power. In the Humanities, the subject has walked a discontinuous path: from the hegemony granted by Descartes鈥 cogito and the rationalist thinkers to the dissolution brought about by post-structuralism. However, in the course of the last decades some aspects of the subject have been restored: as subaltern and gender studies have shown, in discourse, the subject has unfolded as the enunciator who has access to spheres previously vetoed; in technology, the emergence of digital identities has generated new places of enunciation and reception; whereas various disciplines and methodologies such as theories of emotion, posthumanism and animal studies have problematised the limits of humanness. The conference is linked to the research project 'New Subjects in Contemporary Catalan Creation', which focuses on the study of literature without excluding other forms of artistic production.
