Oliver Wilson, a former MMLL undergraduate and MPhil student in ELAC has won an essay competition run by the journal听French Screen Studies.听 The essay, 鈥淎 Waste of Space: Queer Relationalities and Abject Materialities in Claire Denis鈥檚听High Life听and Julia Ducournau鈥檚听Titane鈥 was described by the panel who oversaw the 2023 award as 鈥渢heoretically highly ambitious but also assured鈥. He was commended for his exemplary interweaving of theory and close reading in a way that 鈥渂uil[t] throughout to an impressive conclusion.鈥
, who supervised the essay for a Master鈥檚 module titled 鈥淪paces of Queer Cinema鈥, adds: 鈥淚n this ambitious and beautifully-written essay, Olly orchestrated a multileveled argument that will be of great interest to fellow scholars and students with interests in posthumanism, queer theory, and French film studies.鈥
