Oliver Wilson, a former MMLL undergraduate and MPhil student in ELAC has won an essay competition run by the journal听French Screen Studies.听 The essay, 鈥淎 Waste of Space: Queer Relationalities and Abject Materialities in Claire Denis鈥檚听High Life听and Julia Ducournau鈥檚听Titane鈥� was described by the panel who oversaw the 2023 award as 鈥渢heoretically highly ambitious but also assured鈥�. He was commended for his exemplary interweaving of theory and close reading in a way that 鈥渂uil[t] throughout to an impressive conclusion.鈥�
, who supervised the essay for a Master鈥檚 module titled 鈥淪paces of Queer Cinema鈥�, adds: 鈥淚n this ambitious and beautifully-written essay, Olly orchestrated a multileveled argument that will be of great interest to fellow scholars and students with interests in posthumanism, queer theory, and French film studies.鈥�
