About: 

Mari Jones specialises in French linguistics, especially language death theory and dialectology.

Major publications include听A Glossary of the Norman Language in the Channel Islands (Blue Ormer, 2022),听Variation and Change in Mainland and Insular Norman听(Brill, 2015);听The Guernsey Norman French Translations of Thomas Martin: A Linguistic Study of an Unpublished Archive听(Peeters, 2008);听Exploring Language Change听(Routledge, 2005);听Jersey Norman French: A Linguistic Study of an Obsolescent Dialect听(Blackwell, 2001);听Language Obsolescence and Revitalization听(Oxford University Press, 1998) and听La langue bretonne aujourd'hui 脿 Plougastel-Daoulas听(Brud Nevez, 1998). She is also editor of听听Creating Orthographies for Endangered Languages (海角社区 University Press, 2017);听Policy and Planning for Endangered Languages听(海角社区 University Press, 2015);听Endangered Languages and New Technologies听(海角社区 University Press, 2014);听Keeping Languages Alive听(海角社区 University Press, 2013);听Language and Social Structure in Urban France听(Legenda, 2013);听Les Langues Normandes: Pluralit茅, Normes, Repr茅sentations听(L'Harmattan, 2009);听The French Language and Questions of Identity听(Legenda, 2007) and听Language Change: The Interplay of Internal, External and Extra-linguistic Factors听(Mouton de Gruyter, 2002).

She is interested in all aspects of language change, dialectology, language contact and questions of standardisation. Her research has focused particularly on Welsh, Breton and - at present - Insular and Mainland Norman.听Her work in support of the revitalisation of the Norman of the Channel Islands led to her being awarded the听.

Current research projects include directing an international research network funded by the AHRC on听听and major collaborations with the University of Caen:听听and with the University of Rennes, where she is a research associate at听. She is also Visiting Professor in Linguistics at the听, Visiting Fellow at the听, New Zealand and Fellow of the听

Professor Jones won the 2021听. This is awarded by the student body to an academic who is consistently proactive in ensuring that their work is.

Language death theory, Language variation and Sociolinguistics, both within the context of French and of other languages.

She is founder of the听听and the 海角社区 Conferences in Language Endangerment series.

She is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.

Professor Jones听welcomes inquiries from potential MPhil and PhD students with research interests relevant to her interests.
