  • Society of Italian StudiesÌýRookeÌýMemorial PrizeÌýThe Department is delighted to congratulate Helena Phillips-Robins for being awarded the 2013ÌýRookeÌýprize. The prize is open to Masters and PhD students working on Italy in UK and Irish Universities. Helena's prize-winning entry was herÌýMPhilÌýdissertation onÌýSecular Song and Vision in Dante'sÌýCommedia. She is now working on a PhD on Dante's Philosophy of Music.
  • °ä±ô²¹³Ü»å¾±²¹Ìý°Õ²¹°ù»å±ð±ô±ô¾±Ìý°Õ±ð°ù°ù²â,Ìýour Gates PhD scholar, has contributed to a forthcoming book which examines how Dante commentaries have contributed to the advancement of literary criticism. The book will be published by Notre Dame University Press in December. There is an article about Claudia's research on theÌý.Ìý

  • American Association of Italian Studies Book Prize (20th-21stÌýcentury).ÌýCongratulations toÌýPierpaoloÌýAntonelloÌýon the award of this prize for his bookÌý.Ìý
  • Dr AbigailÌýBrundinÌýand two colleagues secure funding for major new project
  • 2012 Society of Italian Studies Postgraduate Prize.ÌýThe Department is delighted to congratulate Ray Carlson for winning the 2012 SIS Postgraduate Prize. The prize is open to all Masters and PhD students working on Italy in UK and Irish Universities. Ray's prize-winning entry was his dissertation for his º£½ÇÉçÇø M Phil in European Literature and Culture, entitled '"EccellentissimoÌýpoetaÌýetÌýamatoreÌýdivinissimo":ÌýBenedettoÌýVarchi'sÌýFormulation of Michelangelo's Poetic Persona at the Florentine Academy'.
  • DrÌýSansonÌýhas been awarded an Isaac Newton Trust grant (2012)Ìýto carry out research on 'Conduct Literature for and about Women in Italy, 1500-1900: Prescribing and Describing Life'. From the sixteenth century onwards, with the diffusion of the printing press and the establishment of the vernacular as a language of culture, Italy saw a wide production of texts for and about women which aimed to define the nature of women, their role in society and their conduct in everyday life. This little-studied literary production, which is essential for the understanding of women's role in society across the centuries, is the focus of this research. Dr FrancescoÌýLucioliÌýhas been appointed to collaborate with DrÌýSansonÌýon the project between 1 October 2012 and 30 March 2013.

  • AbigailÌýBrundinÌýhas been awarded anÌýAHRCÌýNetwork grantÌýunder the theme 'Translating Cultures', for a project in collaboration with the National Trust, entitled: 'National Trust libraries: an untapped resource. A pilot study of Italian books at Belton House, Lincolnshire.' A full description of the project can be found at this link:Ìý.

  • British-Italian Society /Society of Italian StudiesÌýRookeÌýMemorial PrizeÌýThe Department is delighted to congratulate Marie-FranceÌýCourriolÌýfor being awarded the 2011ÌýRookeÌý/ SIS postgraduate prize. The prize is open toÌýMasters and PhD students working on Italy in UK and Irish Universities. Marie-France's prize-winning entry was her dissertation from her º£½ÇÉçÇø M Phil in Screen Media and Culture 2011/12, entitled 'Documenting the Epic: Realist and Documentary Strategies in Italian Colonial Film (1935-1939)'. She is now working on a PhD on Italian cinema between The University of Charles deÌýGaulleÌý-ÌýLilleÌý3 and º£½ÇÉçÇø.
  • ASMIÌýpostgraduate essay prize winnerÌýThe Department is delighted to congratulate NatalieÌýFullwoodÌýfor being awarded the 2011ÌýASMIÌý(Association for the Study of Modern Italy) postgraduate essay prize. The prize is awarded annually to 'an outstanding piece of unpublished work by a postgraduate student, dealing with some aspect of modern Italian history, society, or politics in the period between c. 1780 and the present'. Natalie submitted her PhD, 'Cinema, space, gender:ÌýCommediaÌýall'italiana, 1958-1970', in October 2011.
  • The Department is delighted to welcome for 2011-12 Dr Heather Webb, as a lecturer in Dante and medieval Italian literature. Dr Webb has come to º£½ÇÉçÇø from the US (Ohio State University) and is a former visiting fellow atÌýCRASSH. She will be teaching across all our undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the medieval area.
  • 150thÌýanniversary.Ìý2011 marked theÌý150thÌýanniversary of the Unification of Italy in 1861. There will be a mass of commemorative events, exhibitions and conferences as part of the celebrations in Italy.Ìý

  • The Italian department is delighted to offer its warmest congratulations to two prize-winners for their performances in Tripos 2010. The Italian Department Prize for the most outstanding performance in Italian at Part II has been awarded to ElizaÌýApperleyÌý(Emmanuel). Eliza offered a majority of her papers in Italian and achieved a very distinguished First Class degree. The Department has also awarded an exceptional prize for excellence in Italian Culture to AshleyÌýCukierÌý(Fitzwilliam). Ashley offered his language papers in French and his scheduled papers and dissertations in Italian and was awarded the top First (starred) in the Faculty.
